Painful conversations

Exploring pain and life ….

This thing called pain ….

Pain is complex, exhausting, fascinating, heartbreaking and life changing. Painful Conversations provides a window that opens onto this world of pain. It explores the experience of pain in all its different dimensions – physical, emotional and existential. Not just what we know about pain, but what might help us to live life well in a world where pain is always present.

To do this, I will interview a range of people. Researchers, clinicians and people living with pain themselves. I will explore with them the experience of pain. What do we know about pain? What are the answers that lie around the corner? And for those who have faced pain, what are their stories of resilience, strength and hope?

These are some of the questions I will be asking and some of the issues that I will be exploring. It is our stories about pain that are often the deepest part of who we are. There are people with stories to tell that will inform us, inspire us and sometimes challenge us. I am looking forward to bringing these stories to you as together we explore the world of pain.

Who am I?

My name is Philip Siddall. I have been a clinician, educator and researcher in the field of pain for over 30 years and worked in university hospital pain clinics in Sydney, Australia and Cambridge, England. My main focus of research has been the problem of pain in people with spinal cord injuries and much of my research has been investigating how the brain is involved in our experience of pain – a fascinating area. In recent years, I have had an increasing interest in pain and deeper issues such as our identity and sense of meaning and purpose. As a teacher, one of my passions is to understand and communicate what we know in a way that not only informs, but also inspires and leads to positive change. That is part of my drive to bring these stories to you.

Welcome to Painful Conversations.
